Business Must Lead the Sustainability Revolution...

Global capitalism stands at a crossroads, facing environmental meltdown and a widening gap between rich and poor. Indeed, a rising tide of anti-globalization protest and terrorism threatens to derail the global capitalist agenda. We are clearly on an unsustainable path and the old strategies of the industrial age are no longer sufficient.

Yet while many call for more governmental aid, intervention and philanthropy, I believe that business is uniquely equipped, at this point in history, to lead us toward a more "sustainable" world. Corporations are the only entities in the world today with the technology, resources, capacity, and global reach required. Properly focused, the profit motive can accelerate (not inhibit) the transformation toward global sustainability, with civil society, governments, and multilateral agencies all playing crucial roles as collaborators and watchdogs.

Over the next decade or so, I believe that the global challenges mentioned above will constitute the biggest business opportunity in the history of commerce. "Sustainable" enterprises will learn to craft competitively superior strategies that simultaneously: raise the quality of life for the world’s poor; respect cultural diversity; and conserve the ecological integrity of the planet for future generations.

The time is now for the birth of a new, more inclusive form of capitalism - one that uplifts the entire human family of 6.6 billion while at the same time replenishing and restoring nature. Making such societal contributions and creating shareholder value will take real imagination and a fresh approach to business strategy.

Creating the business strategies required to address these exciting and uplifting challenges is the focus of my life's work. On the pages of this website, you will find my most important contributions to the emerging field of sustainable enterprise including articles, papers, cases and reports; audio clips, videos and podcasts; as well as my CV, biosketches and photos.
